Return-to-office mandates are back in the headlines!

Recent reports show that 38% of UK employees say news of stricter in-office policies has negatively impacted their wellbeing. That figure jumps to 42% for women and is highest among those aged 20–29. In Scotland, it’s estimated that 80,000 professionals have quit their jobs this year due to a lack of flexible working options.

We’re watching this closely, not just as a business, but as a team made up of parents, partners, and people with lives outside the screen. We’ve embraced remote work since day one, but we also value in-person time. Whether it’s local meetups or sessions at The Ned, the magic often happens when we connect F2F. The flexibility has been vital – and we’re now moving to a more hybrid model as we open some office space.

As a technology advisor, we see both sides of the coin. We know that the right tools can unlock flexibility, streamline operations, and keep teams connected. But they’re not a substitute for clarity, culture, or choice. People still need environments that work for them.

We’d love to hear where others are landing on this?

– Is your organisation fully remote, fully in-office, or somewhere in the middle?
– What’s really working and what isn’t?
– How much should technology shape the way we work in future?

For this week’s JoinTheQ, we’ve been keeping our eyes on the market and looking at some of the milestones of microchips over the years — and just how far they’re about to take us.

The latest breakthrough? Majorana 1, Microsoft’s new quantum chip. Built with topological qubits, it’s designed to be more stable and scalable than anything we’ve seen before. Majorana 1 can potentially fit a million qubits onto a single chip that’s not much bigger than the CPUs inside desktop PCs and servers – all the world’s current computers combined can’t match what that would be capable of.

This breakthrough builds on decades of microchip innovation — from the first silicon chips powering calculators, to today’s powerful processors that drive everything from smartphones to data centres.

The next chapter in computing begins with Majorana 1. Within years, quantum computers may become a reality. How quickly will we get there, and what lies ahead? Time will tell.

Let’s kick things off with a question that’s got the industry talking…

Has Apple given contact centres a new best friend with the new Hold Assist feature?

First off, this is smart innovation. iOS 26’s Hold Assist uses AI to stay on the line for customers, handling the hold music, menus, and delays, then reconnecting them only when a real agent is available. It’s a subtle feature with the power to transform the customer experience.

It really makes you think – Apple had to build this tech because hold times are STILL the number one frustration for customers.

When one of the world’s biggest tech companies steps in to fix a problem that’s been around for decades, what does that say about the state of customer service today?
